Out of the Box TIP :
If you loss your fstab entries for mounted drives and have no idea where is what so don’t panic just calm down take a deep breath.. 🙂
run this command
cat /etc/mtab > /etc/fstab
What this command does it will copy mtab to FSTAB
“(MTAB file handles the mounted devices and is automatically updated by the mount command. And it looks a bit similar to fstab but not the 100% same [ notice rw and ro for read/write and read only ] And it does only lists the mounted devices !)”
Then you will have your fstab near to this :
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 / ext3 rw 0 0
proc /proc proc rw 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs rw 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,gid=5,mode=620 0 0
/dev/hda1 /boot ext3 rw 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0
none /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc binfmt_misc rw 0 0
sunrpc /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs rpc_pipefs rw 0 0
/dev/hdb1 /mnt ext2 rw 0 0
and restart your system after you will find your fstab with relevant mount points in my case my fstab turns to like this after reboot..
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 / ext3 rw 0 0
/dev/hda1 /boot ext3 rw 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0
/dev/hdb1 /mnt ext2 rw 0 0
Note : don’t try to remove ” devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,gid=5,mode=620 0 0 ” this entry from your fstab before you reboot if you did you will lose remote access to the server.
